Undama

Undama

“Un” means “luck” and “dama (tama) ” means “ball” in Japanese language, so “Undama” can be translated as “luck ball” in English. Near the main building of Udo shrine, there is a turtle-shaped rock called “Kameishi” with a dent on the shell, which is enclosed with a rope for purifying called “Shimenawa”. Visitors there can purchase five Undamas and try throwing the balls into the dent for their luck. It’s one of the must-do things when visiting Miyazaki!!
